Communion

— For the week of April 6, 2008 —

Oh, what sweet communion
I enjoy through the day!
— Terry Toler

And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,
and gave it to them, saying,
"This is my body given for you;
do this in remembrance of me."
— Luke 22:19

Partaking of Holy Communion has become a time of contemplation for me, but it was not always a time of introspection. In fact, I was much like my small, six-year-old niece, Mariah Dawn, who whispered to her mother at a communion service, "I love it when we have these little snacks at church!"

Although I have grown spiritually, I must confess that I still have that youthful exuberance as I approach the time of Holy Communion. I have moved from anticipating the little snacks as a child to feasting on the thoughts of what Jesus accomplished through His death on the cross, subsequent burial, and triumphant resurrection from the grave!

Today when we gather at the table, I marvel at the oneness of the family of God eating together at the Table of Remembrance. Oh, what sweet fellowship and communion we enjoy together!

More importantly, one day we will move from the "little snack time" to celebrating with Jesus at the great Marriage Supper of the lamb. And what a family time that will be!

In the meantime, we can remember Jesus, worship Him, and enjoy His presence not only during Holy Communion in church, but every day, all day long!
