Authority

— For the week of August 28, 2011 —

It's hard, in a few minutes on Sunday morning,
to offset the values presented through the media in the course of a week.

When Jesus had called the Twelve together,
he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases.
— Luke 9:1

I am reminded of a conversation Jesus had with His disciples. They were troubled over His words, "In a little while you will see me no more" (John 16:17).

To help them better understand, He confronted them by saying, "You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy...and no one will take away your joy" (vv.20,22).

It was Jesus' sacrifice that would constitute both joy and sorrow for them. And it was in the name of the risen Christ — Jesus — that they would find the power and authority to do the work of ministry after Jesus ascended into heaven.

It is the same with you. Your authority, your power, and your credibility do not come because you are talented, gifted, charming, or articulate — but through the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The church can be full of itself, parading its organization and programs before the world. At times, it is even boastful in its accomplishments. But be reminded of the words Jesus spoke in John 15:5, "Apart from Me you can do nothing."

I wonder what it will take before we fully catch on to His admonition. He is risen! And that means that with Him, we can accomplish everything He has called us to do and be all He has ordained us to be.
